Joe Arnold's Final Projuct

Hello blog. As you can see this is my photostory for the final project. His name is Larry Crossno and he does many things for an old guy. One thing he likes to do the most is collect different things. As you can see from the photos he collects things like Yu-gi-oh cards, swords, guns, and bells. Not only that, from these photos you can see that he works on bikes and his house. The thing is that he has been working on this house for quite awhile. As I was talking with him I wanted to find out more about his house and the changes he was making to it. I learned many things while I was taking a tour of his house and found things like how he had been working on it for 11 years. As far as the bikes pictures go, it was like a hobby for him to build things as well as play a popular card game among little children called Yu-gi-oh in his spare time. He also works on different projects like concrete cementing and buildings warehouses. As you can tell, he tries to keep himself as busy as he can. I hope you guys enjoy the photos that I have submitted to this blog and I hope everyone has a great summer.

Randy Sams' Outreach Shelter - Lindsey Frankovich

On any given night, in the greater Texarkana community there are over 250 individuals, who are homeless. The Randy Sams‘ Outreach Shelter serves to try and stop the cycle of homelessness. The shelter helps families and individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness such as men, women, children, veterans, the hungry, the low-income, and those who are unemployed or underemployed. Every year the shelter serves over 7,000 clients, that includes, the shelters residents and people within the community. To date, Randy Sams’ has transitioned over 500 clients to permanent housing. Providing services such as baby, utility, and rental assistance and will also purchase bus tickets for residents who are relocating for work or to be near family. The primary mission of the shelter is to provide meals and a place to sleep for the homeless, other services include, life skills training, employment referral, social security advocacy, medical referrals and escort, and prescription drug assistance.
About 55 residents, including 8 – 10 women, call the shelter home. At Randy Sams’ they are able to seek refuge from the harsh elements of the streets. The 90-Day Resident Program allows all residents to meet with the on-site Case Manager in order to obtain permanent housing and employment.
The Spirit of St. Michael’s, medical van comes once a week to offer screenings and medical advice to the residents. Many volunteers come into the shelter to serve the residents food, help with can food drives, organize and help with the up keep. Every evening a church group or a group of individuals come in to prepare and serve dinner. The shelter was founded in 1993, after the death of Randy Sams. Having been an active member in the soup kitchen at St. James Episcopal Church, Randy’s parents donated the land and the seed money to start the shelter.
Although the Randy Sams’ Outreach Shelter provides refuge for its’ clients, this is only the first step in combating homelessness.

Days at the Dairy Farm

Hey Everyone. My final project was on a Dairy Farm. I tried to get different elements of the farm. The family that I know that runs the farm live in Maud, Texas. They moved to Maud from Pennsylvania. The Barnhart family has been in the dairy farming business for as long as Richard (the father) can remember. He grew up in this business. Richard and his wife, Kelly, have four kids, Kevin, Brian, David and Lindsey. Richard's sons help around on the farm when they can. Brian, his second oldest, is a student at Texarkana College, and plans to take over the farm one day.

I'm a country girl, so I enjoyed learning more about how the dairy farm processes happen. They were very willing to tell their story through photos.

Thanks for a great semester everyone. I've enjoyed this class, and have learned so much.

Ultimate combines the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, the game of Ultimate is played by two seven-player squads with a Frisbee on a field similar to football. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the end zone. A player must stop running while in possession of the Frisbee, but may pivot and pass to any of the other receivers on the field. Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds. Ultimate is governed by Spirit of the Game, a tradition of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the players rather than referees. Ultimate is played in more than 42 countries by hundreds of thousands of men and women, girls and boys. While there are no Ultimate leagues in Texarkana there are a couple of places to get in on pick-up games.

Circle J Cowboy Church – 'Where a Cowboy can be a Christian, and a Christian can be a Cowboy.'

The Circle J Cowboy Church, located at I-549 & Hwy 237, is an Interdenominational Christian church committed to bringing Christians together. These Christians also happen be cowboys. In 2005, the church had a total of 35 members but today they have over 250 active church members. The church holds Sunday morning worship at 10:30 AM, and the dress code is casual and comfortable – mostly cowboy hats and denim.

In addition to having weekly worship services, the church holds many cowboy events throughout the year. ‘Team Roping’ and ‘Youth Rodeo’ are held each week as long as weather permits, while a ‘Buck Out’ is held on the first and third Sunday of each month. Team Roping and Youth Rodeo are for both young adults and the church youth groups. The Buck Out is for children, youth, and adults and sponsor events like pee-wee sheep riding, junior steer riding, and adult steer riding.

For my photostory, I chose to shoot lifeguards. My goal for my story was to show lifeguards- from their training, to them actually working at the pool. I started with the pool before it opened, I wanted to show the difference in how the pool looked then, to how it looks now. Next, I shot the guards training at the college, getting certified. Today I went to Minton's Sportsplex, where the guards are working, and took pictures of them actually guarding. There were 4 birthday parties today, so it was pretty busy! Hopefully you guys like my story, I had alot of fun shooting it.

Dark Slide

The Dark Slide skate park, located in downtown Texarkana, is the hub of skate life in the city. With a pro shop, board rentals, concession, and extreme ramps, the mostly-guy skate crowd’s every want is fulfilled. From older experienced skaters like Dave Hanson, 19 to the youth Taylor Garden, 12, the park generates an eclectic atmosphere.
Pulled together by the owner, Lorraine Smith, the park’s feminine presence, the park offers a five day a week outlet for skaters. In a city where skating is banned in most outside areas, the guys have created a camaraderie-filled community of skateboard lovers. From all night skate-outs to dodge ball and concerts to skate contests, the guys enjoy skating, hanging together, and learning from each other.

I was intending to do a photo story on my nextdoor neighboor, named Mr.Stone who has been playing trombone for several years. He is my grandfather's age. I found out that he got sent to the hospital so I really couldn't get any of him playing at his final concert for the second time around band. So instead i decided to just do a photostory on the band itself. It contained lots of elderly and young people that were my age. It was so neat to see them have something in common, music. I tried to get it from different angles so you could feel as though you were part of the band itself at the concert hope you all enjoy.

First Choice Pregnancy Resource Center services women between ages 12-54 to help assist them along in pregnancies. In the history of the pregnancy center there has been an 11-year old come in for a pregnancy test when she should have been in school taking a math test. Little Jackie's story is not much different from a typical teenage mother trying to learn how to raise a child while still being a child herself.

Jackie Simpson, 16, became pregnant at the age of 12 with her first child.

Jackie gave birth to Janese at 13 years old, here they are outside in between church services

Jackie went to prom this year for her "sweet sixteen" with a group of friends. "I try to live a normal teenager's life, I do fun stuff but I have to take in account that I'm not coming home to an Xbox or Ipod, I'm coming home to a baby!"

Jackie holds the credit card that has her monthly child support from Janese's dad. "He really has no part in Janese's life, we are struggling and it seems he doesn't care."

Jackie gets some study time in while Janese is fast asleep. "I know I have made a mistake, I can tell by the looks I get from people, but I'm trying to learn from them and make myself better."

Janese goes to a local daycare where she gets off around 4:30 each evening and Jackie is there to wait for her.

Jackie pictured with her brother JaRoy have to wait outside about an hour each day after school until their parents come home to let them in.

Janese is now 2 years old, her 3rd birthday is coming in June. "I hope girls learn from my mistakes, but I'm happy with Janese, I love her, she is my world!"

For the first part of my photostory, I went and shot the pool before it opened for the season. I wanted everyone to be able to see the stark contrast between how it looked then, & how it will look next week. Next, I went & shot lifeguard training(it was held at the vollege because it was too cold outside). Today the pool finally opened so I got some shots of the 4 people(kids of course) who were brave enough to go in the water. I also caught the 2 lifeguards on duty using their cell phones, which I thought was kind of funny. Next week, they're holding a luau at the pool & it slould be packed. Hopefully I'll be able to show the difference in how the lifeguards have to work, which is the point I'm going for. Also, does anyone know how to check the white balance on the camera to get rid of the blue tint?

Hello everyone. This is my 2nd sports assignment for this class. I decided that I would head to my town to see if I could get some shots of our baseball team. I decided with some of my shots that i would go with a bit of determination in the playing as well as the casual, laid-back shots. I can see now why it is hard to shot baseball without a zoom lens. My favorite shot was when the bowler was trying some trick shots and I got that low angle. It was hard to do sport feature I enjoyed sport action much more. I do enjoy a challenge though.

For this week's assignment, I photographed a little league team. You can really tell a difference in how the teams behave. While the gray team was praying on the field and running drills, the blue team was going crazy! The little girl in the shots wasn't even on the team, but I had to put her in because of all the stuff she started. In the first picture the coach had to climb on top of the dugout to retrieve a glove the little girl threw up there & in the second picture she was stealing the team's ball caps out of the dugout. She literally had the entire team running everywhere. I really like the shot of the gray team praying, though. I love how the kids really look like they're praying hard. Most of them had their heads in the hands. They really looked like they were taking it seriously. After this shoot, there's no way I could ever coach little league!

Aggie Feature Photos by Jeremy

I took lots of photos at the Aggie Baseball game on the 4th of this month I was looking to see what could be good as Sports Feature examples. The first one that I have with the Coach and a former Texas A&M graduate getting ready to throw the ceremonial first pitch. What is interesting about this is the fact that they are stepping on the School logo, which i think has some memorable significance.

The one after that I took is of the Coach of the Aggies talking with the Umpires. And it looks like from the angle that I took the photo that they are arguing over something, that I feel could be important to the game but doesn't do with any sports action taking place.

The third one is like a faded picture of the Kansas State coach with the dougout of the whole Kansas State team observing where the ball is in play. Like they are really supporting thier team mates and giving one another some support.

The group of number 12 jersey people are students who are freshening up the ground during the seventh enning stretch. What is neat about this is that there almost in a perfect line, and that the number on thier back has a speacial significant meaning. Which A&M is known as the home of the 12th Man.

The fifth photo is don't remember if I was trying to keep the team blirred out on the picture or not, but it's a good angle and line tracing up to the waiting batter. It also showed some of the other cameramen that were present at the time as well.

I did a six photo of the Team celebrating a grand slam, because I thought that it was a great form of a Feature Photo, due to showing that the Aggies were pretty good at thier game. I wasn't sure if it could of replaced one of the other photos.

Hello class!! I was going to cover my nephew’s t-ball game, but since we can’t get a dry day around here, I chose the pool at TC to get some actions shots. I went on two different days and both times provided me with more laughs than I expected.

The first four photos are of day two. These ladies do a water aerobic workout twice a week and some of them have been doing it since 1981!! I chose the first photo because I liked the leading line created by the ladies, the bright colors in the background, and the ‘moment’ that was captured. I chose the second photo because I liked the group of 3 and I liked that they were all smiling!! For the third photo, I decided to go ahead and put in on here because I liked the colors and the group of three. I probably wouldn’t ever publish this because I caught them while they were talking and it’s not as flattering as it could be. The fourth photo, again, I liked because of the group of three and the moment. I liked the lanes in the background that provide the leading lines.

The last three are from the first time I went. I met Aaron and John Mark who were in the middle of a swimming lesson. I chose photo five and six because of the moment and the leading lines again. Photo seven was just put on here to make you smile!! This guy LOVED the diving board! I know I am the last one to post the assignment, but please leave comment and feedback!! I would like to let everyone know that I really enjoyed my final year at TIPA. Hanging out with all the people that I went with and getting to enjoy the College Station atmosphere. I really had a blast there. The best part of the whole shindig was when I participated in the Editorial Cartoon Competition. It had to do with some one in college who was telling a lie about someone who broken down his door and damaged his apartment so, he didn't have to pay the damages. Surprising to me I wound up winning Honorable Mention, which I am very proud of, do to the fact that I was against lots of people that have done cartooning for their college paper and beat them out. That and the fact that A&M here doesn't have a paper. So let me tell you I was shocked to hear my name being called at the awards cerimony. Hopefully this is trying to let me know that I have a future in drawing editorial cartoon's. What do you think?

I don't how many of you all are familiar with street ball, but ESPN does a series on it call AND 1 street ball. Though these men did not have many tricks up their sleeve they were pretty good for older guys......I also tried getting a little tennis as well. I did use the wide angle lens on some shots and I tried to get as close to lighting but it was around 4:00, really harsh light......

Hey everyone. I went to part of a baseball tournament at Spring Lake Park and took the last two photos there. The first three photos are of kids and teenagers practicing pitching and catching. They ranged in age from 4-16. There was a man there that was formally a coach. And he said that he coaches for free to help them learn baseball skills. So, I stepped inside the fence where they were and took quite a bit of photos. Baseball is not my favorite. It's hard to photograph at the exact moment that it would take to be a great photo. I didn't get any of those, I think. Let me know what you all think.

I did my assignment at the monster truck show. Monster trucks, lawn mower races and drunk people. It was great. I know that monster truck racing isn't really a sport. But if NASCAR and curling are sports... why not lawn mower racing?

I decided to be rather ambitious with my assignment. I don't remember what Greg called it, but it's where you slow down the shutter speed and move the camera as the object is going by to create a blurry background.

Sounded like fun and I tried it. He said that it was hard. He wasn't lying.

Cristy's Texarkana Fun Park

For my action sports assignment I went to the Texarkana Fun Park to shoot go-carts. During my time there, I tried to use the lines of the tires and curves of the track to draw in the viewer, and tried to frame using the tires while on the ground. The color wasn't exactly what I had hoped, but it was so bright it was hard to see the screen. While go-carts isn't traditional action photography, I got a lot of action around curves, captured in blowing hair, and laughing faces.

Sports Photography Assignment #1 - Mudbugs Hockey Game by Lindsey Frankovich

For our stop action sports assignment, I had the opportunity to shot the Northern Conference Semifinals: Game One, between the #1 Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs vs. #4 Texas Brahmas hockey game on March 30 at the CenturyTel Center. After trying to rally back in the 3rd quarter, the Mudbugs lost 3-1. I took Mr. Pearson up on his offer to set one of us up for an opportunity to work shadow and shoot the game, he referred me to Doug Collier, a fellow Shreveport Times photographer. I was able to stand in the press box, between the players boxes, directly on the ice. It was EXCELLENT, with no glass for protection, but I must say the players were pretty good about saying HEADS UP!!! I loved every minute of it, I have always loved sports photography, but this was a defining moment for me. Thank you so much Shane, Greg, and Doug for the opportunity. During my twenty minutes in the press box I shot 555 pictures, I was trigger-happy. Caught up in the action and the excitement… the moment, I tried to play with my lines, framing, and depth of field. It took me a minute to adjust to the lighting in the stadium, but I think it turned out pretty good. I’m pleased with photos, although, I must admit it was hard to narrow the selection down to six. Hope I picked the correct photos and everyone enjoys. Let me know what you think…

I did not plan on posting this but after several of my classmates said I should I gave into peer pressure. I participated in the news photography event at TIPA which was a actual news event. Candidates for the police chief opening at College Station meet at the hotel the conference was at and answered questions form the community. We were only allowed to turn in one photo and this is the one I picked. Everyone I showed it to seemed to think it was a great photo and was sure to win something, although it did not place. So, here you go guys feel free to comment let me know what you think.

I went to the TIPA convention this past Wednesday through Satuday, which I competed in the Sports Photography competition. We were allowed to keep the photos that we made so I thought it would be very good to use them for my assignment. I was able to get pretty good photos from different angles. I added one extra one of the base line and a group of players on the field.

For our stop action sport assignment I decided to do golf. I had heard that this would be a difficult sport to capture, but I thought since I enjoy playing golf this would be a great challenge. My love for the sport has not changed but through this assignment, but my love for photographing it has. It was very difficult to catch the club impacting the ball so most of my good shots where ether before or after the impact. By putting the camera right on the ground I could get some good putting action shots, and after some good luck I got a great sand trap shot of the ball and flying sand. Although I love shotting wildlife and outdoor photography and love playing golf I do not enjoy photographing golf. For our assignment on sports photography, I went out to the park. I took pictures of a softball game. It was really hard to get good pictures because of the fence! Even when I went up in the stands, the fence was higher than me. The first picture shows the girls celebrating with one another after the pitcher(#9) struck out a girl. I liked the action on this shot because you see the girls high-fiving each other & you can tell they're having a good time. I thought this second picture looked really crazy! She's getting ready to pitch the ball, but it looks like she'd never be able to see where the ball was going! I liked this 3rd pic because I caught the umpire calling a strike on the girl. I also like the extension on the catcher's arm. My 4th pic shows the pitcher from the other team. I like this picture because of the motion I caught her in. Even though it's through a fence, this picture still came out pretty clear.

ALPHAS STEP......

This weekend I was a judge in a pageant and one of the entertainment segments was a fraternity stepping. It really intrigued me and so I believe I have a photo story. My photo story is to follow the historically black fraternity of Alpha Phi Alpha. They are the first fraternity to be established and have many famous and influential people who have come from it including Civil Rights Activist Martin Luther King. I will follow the fraternity in Arkansas universities such as SAU, Henderson State University, UAMS, and any others I run into. I will detail the life of Alphas as they step, strut, party, education, and community service. I want to capture the story because it's such an exclusive society that many people never get to have access to. I have connections so hopefully this will work out. Shane, I was wondering if I can use some of my photos from our first assignment, to incorporate in my story?

I think it's very inspiring and I REALLY LOVED THE CLASS TODAY!!! It's wonderful he has been on the sidelines of the New Orleans Saints game.......REGGIE BUSH......Wow that' my dream to interview him!!!!!! Old Time Band Player

I decided on choosing a member of the Texarkana Second Time Around Band to do my photo story on. His name is Mr. Stone and he lives next door to my grandparents house. He is around my grandfather's age and had been playing the trombone for years. I think this would be a great photo story because I used to play band myself, and the fact that it is interesting that people still play band instraments no matter what their age.

First off, let me say that the participation in the blog has been stellar. I am very impressed at the critiques that you have given each other. This is one of the best ways that we can learn as photographers.

Second, I wanted to add that I am really impressed with the work here this week. You can already see that Greg Pearson has visited the site, and I couldn't be happier that this is the work he has seen.

Third, remember that your photo story subjects are due to me on Wednesday the 26th of March. This also the day that Greg Pearson will be lecturing in class and it will be mandatory attendance that day.

My photograhper that I used was Lauren Greenfield. When Shane showed us a series of her photographs I automatically thought of a way that I could use a spin off of her. I posed 4 of these pictures, however the very last one just happened, and I was able to catch that moment. I was taking a spin off of her small (anorexic) series of photos. I was trying to go in the direction of the "different styles of women". I wanted it to seem like the women during the day with the dressy jacket for the business woman during the day, and then the cocktail dress at night for night life. I don't know if I got it right this week. But I tried posing pictures, and it was harder than I thought it would be.

This photo captures leading lines with the grass line and street, which Larrain uses.

Capturing reflections opens up the photo, and the leading line of the street draws the viewer.

Reflection of the football

Hi guys, I decided to imitate the magnum photographer, Sergio Larrain. I was interested in his style, especially his use of reflections in photos. His use of reflections adds depth and creates more layers in the pictures, which seems to draw in the viewer. Though he used mirrors to capture reflections, and I used water (though not as well), I still feel it captures his clean lines and multi-layered style. He also had a street shots with a shoe, which is why I choose to shoot on the red brick road with a random heel.

For this week's assignment I chose to imitate Magnum photographer Larry Towell. I love the way his photographs show the relationship between man, nature and animal. I like the lighting and framing in his work and the angles he shoots from. When looking at his work, the photographs bring a sense of calm and gentleness, showing how mother nature and man-kind go hand-n-hand. I shot this assignment last Friday morning during the freak, but fast snow storm. I think my photos show the same gentle spirit and the emotions between man, animal and nature. My Pictures are finally on here! I tried to model my photos after Jari Hakala. You can find this site at: JariHakala.com. Jari's photos are mostly nature shots(lots of trees and plants). I went out to Wright Patman Lake to get my photos. I just drove around looking for things that were similar. Hope you like them!

I imitated art from Jim Goldberg's worth. He seemed to be very modern and his pictures seemed to be portraits mostly. Goldberg seems to capture moments in soft and harsh lights. I tried mixing harsh and soft lights together. I saw a black and white picture of this woman sitting on a bed and I was really intrigued so I tried to capture the moment. I also liked the portrait of Condoleeza Rice with half her face in the light and half in the dark. This is my best imitation I could possibly do.

Assignment #5 Emulation of Tom Ulrich

Tom Ulrich has been involved in photography for 35 years, and has had his photos in National Wildlife, National Geographic and many other popular wildlife and outdoor magazines. Tom enjoys shooting birds the most. Its not so much the amount of color he uses, although he uses a lot, its the contrast of color. Although the photos on his website are not some of his best, the ones he used in his presentation that I saw were amazing. It astounds me the amount of time he will spend on a subject, up to 11 hours straight. I did not try to emulate the 11 hours I tried to emulate the color contrast and I thought the snow would give me a perfect opportunity. I did sit in the snow for an hour trying to be as still as possible to capture a male Cardinal in a white snow background. I did capture that shoot as well as a few other cool ones, although I did not think they were as good. Check out Tom's website www.tomulrichphotos.com

This one with the man and the card deals with a revolt of going into the service and thought that may stand for something that happened imfortant in the 60's and 70's

I decided to also do Harry Gruyaert because he seemed to take picures of photos of things that he saw on television. But he got the aspect where there was a blend of colors. It made each one of his photos unique in an artistic way The photos I took were from old movies called The Boy in the Plastic Bubble and Katheren.....These were from back in the year so they kind of gave me the old feel to it. Which caught my interest was the uniqe pattern given from the screen.

I chose to imitate photos that were taken by Stuart Franklin. I like the way that he shows the beauty of trees both far away and close up. He also like to take different types of photos during different seasons. ( like fall/winter) on some and during the Spring or Summer where the trees are still green and growing tall. He seemed to see the beauty of the artistic way the trees develope unique patterns and shapes that got my attention. I took my photos Sunday afternoon at Spring Lake Park using the normal sun light that was given at that time. The trees that I took pictures of are not as close as in his photos. But they do have their own unique artisitc style that I see simular to his.

I chose Ferdinando Scianna to imitate. I really like his work with shadows and objects. There was one picture with a donkey and the light was coming through a tree. I tried to work with that. I also liked the picture of the bridge and tried to imitate that as well. I worked with ‘earthly elements’ such as sunlight, fog, trees, and water, but I also tried to blend that with manmade elements such as streets and bridges.

Lauren Greenfield photography

I really enjoyed Lauren Greenfield's work. I was very intrigued by her pictures that detail the sexualization of young girls and young women. I work at a pregnancy center and we see so many young girls who are oversexualized. My heart was touched by the many pictures. I decided to do an opposite approach. I wanted to focus on African American girls because Lauren seems to focus on Caucasian girls. I went to a local youth center and took pictures of the local youth girls. I wanted to show how women are trying to teach young girls about chastity and innocence. Lauren Greenfield usually uses harsh light, so the center was dim and I decided to take most of the pictures under fluorescent light.

The first picture is of 2 girls learning a praise dance by their teacher.

The second picture is of a girl who is on the drumline at the local youth center, she was the only girl on the drumline.

The third picture is of the drum major on the drumline she is yelling out a call for the drumline to halt the line.

The last picture is of one of the mentors at the youth center who works with the young girls. Lauren Greenfield's photography consists of portraits as well. This is a portrait of her in a shirt that says "I'm worth the wait!" Most young women and young girls usually have sexually suggestive shirts, so this is out of the ordinary!!!
